The East Valley is our little desert oasis, and the center attraction, Tempe Town Lake. This quaint area of heaven offers a variety of activities and events year round. From the popular 5K community walks to the large-scale triathlons, concerts and fun time festivals, there’s always something going on at Tempe Town Lake. A popular attraction at the lake is the Tempe Beach Park, with waterfront location and large open spaces, is makes for the perfect place for many of these events. With the perfect year round weather you can attend some of the many annual events. Or, for you fishing lovers, spend an afternoon lakeside with your fishing pole. Fish for trout, bass, catfish and sunfish. An Arizona Fishing License is all that is required to fish. Also, enjoy paved paths that wind around the the lake. Cut across the picturesque pedestrian bridge that connects the north and south shores of the lake with a view of the Tempe Center for the Arts. You can even walk or bike down to the Tempe Marketplace, Downtown Tempe’s Mill Avenue, the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt and Papago Park. There’s all sorts of fun to be had.
Baseball is an all time tradition in the East Valley. Spring training brings people from all across the country to watch their favorite baseball team prepare for the regular season. Scottsdale has the beautiful Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, home of the San Francisco Giants. Mesa houses two teams for spring training, one at Hohokam Stadium where the Oakland Athletics get their spring training in, formerly the home of the Chicago Cubs, and the beautiful Sloan Park, now home of the Chicago Cubs. Over in Tempe is the historic Tempe Diablo Stadium where the Los Angeles Angels play out their spring training as did the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners in previous spring training years.
Arizona State University plants its roots in the East Valley with two-campuses, the main campus in Tempe and then there’s the Polytechnic campus with its new College of Innovation and Technology which is located in east Mesa. Both centrally located in each part of the East Valley and easily accessible by any mode of transportation. The East Valley is also home to five community colleges including Mesa Community College, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Maricopa County Community College in Tempe, Scottsdale Community College and Phoenix College East Valley Campus.
Sky Harbor International Airport is centrally located between the East Valley and downtown Phoenix. Easily accessible from any direction by freeway, you are never more than a 20 minute drive from anywhere in the East Valley. Sky Harbor shuttle services offer services to the majority of the East Valley areas as well as bus lines and the PHX Sky Train. The East Valley also has the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport which primarily houses Allegiant Air.
Cross over to the Scottsdale area and you have the historic little corner of downtown that is fun and frisky, and carries an Old West flair. Shop in the colorful souvenir shops, Western Wear boutiques, galleries of Native American jewelry and treat yourself to ice cream at Scottsdale’s famed ice cream parlor, the Sugar Bowl. Or maybe catch a spring training game at the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick and watch the San Francisco Giants get in shape for regular season. If you have the mind for culinary arts, Scottsdale is home to one of the best culinary institutes in the Nation, the Arizona Culinary Institute, located up in the Northern Scottsdale area.
